A fast-developing modern city sprinkled with historic charm.

Situated in the North Indian state of Haryana, Gurgaon is one of the four major satellite cities of Delhi. Once known as the sleepy 'Guru Gram' (guru's village), Gurgaon is now a bustling commerce and IT hub, with sprawling offices dotting the city skyline. Arguably the fastest developing city in northern India, due in part to its proximity to Gurgaon, New Delhi has seen a boom in real estate, with new office and residential buildings rising faster than you can count them. However, peer beyond the obvious and you'll find scenic attractions such as the beautiful Sohna Lake, the last remnant of the Aravalli northern ridge.

City Highlights

Local Overview

Located within close proximity of the city centre, The Westin Sohna Resort and Spa is a serene sanctuary set against the backdrop of a fast developing metropolis. Local attractions including the Wet 'n' Wild resort and Surajkund Lake are both within an hour's drive.

A modern city brimming with many places of interest, events and festivals, Gurgaon also has a storied history, beginning with Muslim rule during the medieval period. Later, the East India Company took over the reins through a treaty signed by Surji Arjungaon in 1803. An illustrious period of historical significance soon followed, with the people of Gurgaon rallying together to provide support for India's fight for independence., Today, Gurgaon boasts fascinating tourist attractions including the Sultanpur Bird Sanctuary, the tranquil Sohna Lake, the Sheetala Devi Temple and the historic town of Nuh.

Getting Around

While Gurgaon often throws up plenty of dust and traffic jams, public transport within the city is generally adequate. The main city bus depot connects to neighbouring towns including Delhi, Jaipur, Alwar and Chandigarh. To visit the business parks, look out for the new bus routes that take you to places such as DLF City and Unitech International Business Park for a mere six rupees.

Cycle rickshaws are another alternative to explore the sights of Gurgaon; drivers typically demand five rupees per head for a distance of 1.5-2km. Considering taking a train? Gurgaon has a small station on the Delhi-Jaipur railway line, but it only receives about five trains a day. Plans are currently underway to build an extension of the Delhi Metro, with five stations along MG Road, by June 2010.

Soak in the beautiful serenity of Sohna Lake

One of the most beautiful lakes in India, Sohna Lake Gurgaon is the last remnant of the Aravalli northern ridge, situated amid the scenic Aravalli hills. Legend has it that Sohna Lake (Sohna means gold in Hindi) got its name from a stream nearby whose sands are said to have been speckled with gold. A popular tourist attraction, Sohna Lake's springs are situated at the feet of a perpendicular rock capped by a rocky dome.

Explore the colourful wildlife in Sultanpur Bird Sanctuary

Every year, the advent of winter brings birds from as far as Siberia to Sultanpur Bird Sanctuary. Located some 16km from Gurgaon, the Sultanpur Bird Sanctuary is home to over 100 species of birds including rosy pelicans, kingfishers, demoiselle cranes and sandpipers. Try to spot the hideouts and watch towers, as they offer a better view of the birds in their natural habitat.

Embark on a rural journey at Nuh

Situated some 45km south of Gurgaon on Delhi-Alwar Road, Nuh is a small town with a rich history. Here, one can visit the tomb of Sheikh Musa, famous for its shaking minarets that can be distinctly felt a distance away. If you're keen to explore further afield, make it a point to visit the mosque and the tomb of Bahadur Khan Nahir. Here, red sandstone and grey quartzite are masterfully combined to create a dramatic architectural structure.
